Tele-TOX
Medication Monitoring Beyond the Office
Tele-TOX helps healthcare providers coordinate remote urine or Oral Fluid (Saliva) collection as part of a telehealth or hybrid-care workflow — from ordering and patient collection through laboratory processing and online results.
Overview
Extending Medication Monitoring Into Remote Care
Telehealth changes where the clinical encounter takes place, but it does not remove the need for structured medication-monitoring workflows.
Tele-TOX was developed to help providers coordinate urine or saliva collection when patients are being seen remotely.
Tele-TOX connects the virtual visit with the physical collection workflow.
How it works
A Simple Remote Collection Workflow
The Tele-TOX sequence mirrors the workflow TMS already supports today: online ordering, mailed collection materials, barcode identification, a sealed specimen bag, prepaid return postage, direct return to the laboratory partner, and online results.
- 1
Visit + Order
The provider conducts the visit and initiates the appropriate monitoring request.
- 2
Kit Sent
A package is sent containing collection instructions, collection materials, specimen packaging, and return shipping materials.
- 3
Collection
Depending on the workflow, collection may involve urine or saliva, with saliva collection sometimes observed during the telehealth encounter.
- 4
Return to Laboratory
The packaged specimen is shipped directly to the qualified laboratory partner using the established return process.
- 5
Results Online
After the qualified laboratory partner processes the specimen, results are made available through the applicable reporting environment.
Collection methods
Flexible Collection Options for Remote Care
Urine Collection
TMS can support remote urine specimen collection workflows when appropriate to the provider's clinical and laboratory program.
Oral Fluid (Saliva) Collection
The existing Tele-TOX program also supports saliva collection. Current TMS materials describe the ability to observe a patient opening and using a numbered, sealed collection device during the telehealth appointment when specimen substitution is a concern.
The appropriate collection method, monitoring decision, and interpretation of laboratory results remain with the treating healthcare professional and applicable laboratory protocols.
