What it describes
Pharmacogenomic testing describes inherited variation in how a patient may metabolize certain medications. It is information for the prescriber, not a prescription.
What it does not do
It does not select a medication, guarantee response, or replace clinical assessment and monitoring.
When practices find it useful
It is most often ordered where response has been unpredictable or where several medications with known metabolic pathways are in use.
Coordination matters
The value depends on the result reaching the prescriber in usable form, at the time the decision is made. That is a workflow problem more than a laboratory one.
